National Assembly to appeal court nullification of section 84, 12 of Electoral Act

The controversy over Section 84, subsection 12 of the new Electoral Act 2022 is not yet over, despite a court judgment nullifying it.

This is because the two chambers of the National Assembly have said they will appeal the judgement by a Federal High Court in Umuahia, nullifying the controversial section.

Justice Evelyn Anyadike had ordered the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, to delete the controversial section.

In a motion adopted on the floor of the House in plenary, the federal lawmakers asked Malami to hold action on the court order pending the outcome of their plan to appeal.

Some of the lawmakers also suggested that the House report Justice Anyadike to the National Judicial Council over the manner in which she handled the case.

In the Senate chamber; the Senators also resolved to appeal the judgement following the adoption of a motion moved by the Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, and seconded by the Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe.
