Nigerian media organisations flag-off ‘information blackout’ protest

Media organisations in Nigeria have begun a protest to resist attempts by the Federal Government to undermine press freedom in the country.

The protest started yesterday, with a uniform front-page banner headlines on major national dailies, with the title: Information Blackout.

The media orgainsations are opposed to proposed amendments of the Nigerian Press Council Act and the National Broadcasting Commission Act.

The proposed laws intend to give the government excessive powers to regulate the media, including for the Minister of Information to determine the code of practice for journalists.

The President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Mustapha Isah, said the Information Blackout will be sustained through various means in the coming days.

Speaking in a separate interview on television, Kabir Yusuf of the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria, said stakeholders are not opposed to regulation, so long it is done by an independent body.
