Northern leaders dump power shift to south in 2023 elections; await court judgement on VAT

Governors of the nineteen northern states have dumped the agreement on the rotation of power between the North and the South.

The nineteen northern governors have said that they will not support power shift to the South at the end of President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure in 2023.

The group says it wants strict enforcement of provisions of the 1999 Constitution on the election of the next president of Nigeria in 2023.

This was part of decisions reached at an emergency meeting of the Northern Governors’ Forum at the Kaduna State Government House.

The Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, announced the decision at the end of the meeting.

Governor Lalong said the Northern Governors also agreed to respect the Court ruling on the Value Added Tax dispute between the Rivers State Government and the Federal Inland Revenue Service.

However, Governor lalong said they are on the opinion that the initial judgment by a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt has raised questions on other government taxes and deductions.

On the issue of insecurity that is destroying the northern part of the country, Governor Lalong said the chief executives of the nineteen states called for sustained collaboration with the security agencies to deal with the problem.

Earlier, at the beginning of the meeting of the Northern Governors Forum, the Sultan of Sokoto, who led other traditional rulers to attend the meeting, stressed the need for decisions to be implemented.
