Rampant cases of incest fuels concern about safety of girl child

The arrest of 44-year-old OLUWAFEMI OYEBOLA by the police in Ogun State for allegedly raping his own daughter has further raised the issue of the wellbeing of the girl child.

OYEBOLA, who is said to be a pastor of the Christ Apostolic Church, is alleged to have been forcefully having sexual intercourse with his daughter after the death of his wife in 2015.

The alleged incestuous father is said to have impregnated his daughter three times and forced her to abort the pregnancies, before compelling her to undergo forced family planning so that she would not become pregnant again.

It was at that stage that the teenage girl reported her problem to a nongovernmental organization, which also took the matter to the Owode-Egbado Divisional Police Headquarters in Ogun State.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ABIMBOLA OYEYEMI, told Lasgidi FM News Desk that the Commissioner of Police, KENNETH EBRIMSON has ordered full investigation of the case.

OYEYEMI said the investigation is being handled by the Anti Human Trafficking and Child Labor Unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department.

Following the development; the Ogun State Police Command spokesman, ABIMBOLA OYEYEMI advised mothers to always pay close attention to their female children.

Meanwhile; Lasgidi FM’s Crime Correspondent, NAJITE ATIRENE, spoke with women and child’s right activist, BETTY ABAH, on the rise in cases of sexual offenses, and she suggested that the offenders should be shamed in public.

BETTY ABAH also recommends that children should be sensitized from a young age, just as she advised parents to get closer to their children.

On the case of parents who prevent their children from speaking up against acts of sexual molestation by close family members, BETTY ABAH said parents should not trust their children with anyone.

The women and child’s right activist called for the strengthening of the law against sex offenders so as to discourage such acts.
