Reps revisits three gender bills for constitution amendment

Members of the House of Representatives have agreed to reverse their decisions on three gender-based bills for amendment of the 1999 Constitution that were rejected.

The gender-based bills include citizenship for foreign husbands of Nigerian women and thirty-five percent affirmative action for women.

Following the development, the bills would be reintroduced before the House for another round of debate and voting.

The federal lawmakers took the decision following criticism by women advocates, who led a protest to the National Assembly on Wednesday last week.

Hundreds of women also stormed the federal parliament today for another round of protest, as the world marked International Women’s Day.
