Senate begins fresh amendment of Amended Electoral Act 2022

The Nigerian Senate has initiated a move to further amend the amended Electoral Act of 2022, which President Muhammadu Buhari signed into law on Friday, February 25, 2022.

The move by the Senate comes a day after Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja barred President Muhammadu Buhari and the Senate President against changing any provision of the electoral law without following the provisions of the law.

At the resumption of plenary today, the Senate President Ahmad Lawan said the judiciary cannot stop the legislature from making laws, adding that the 1999 Constitution provides for the separation of powers.

Recall that President Buhari had sent a letter to the National Assembly asking the lawmakers to remove Section 84, subsection 12, of the Electoral Act.
