Senate begins fresh round of 1999 Constitution amendment

The Nigerian Senate has called for the submission of proposals for further alteration of the 1999 Constitution. It said the move is to promote good governance and the welfare of all persons in the country.

This was made known by the Deputy Senate President and Chairman of the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Review of the 1999 Constitution, Senator OVIE OMO-AGEGE.

In a statement on the Senate’s Twitter handle, Senator OMO-AGEGE said the general public, as well as executive and judicial bodies requested to make submissions to the committee.

Also expected to make presentations are civil society organizations, professional bodies and other interest groups.

According to the statement; the focus areas include gender equality for women and girls; federal structure and power devolution; as well as local government autonomy.

Other area are public revenue, fiscal federation and revenue allocation; the Nigerian police and Nigerian security architecture, and comprehensive judicial reforms.

Senator OMO-AGEGE also said electoral reforms would receive attention, as well as socio-economic and cultural rights.

He said the Senate Committee would also give attention to residency and “indigene” provisions, immunity; the National Assembly, and state creation.
