Senate Passes Electoral Act Amendment Bill, as House of Reps invites INEC and NCC

The Senate has passed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, with a provision for conditional electronic transmission of results of elections.

The Senate approved for the Independent National Electoral Commission to consider electronic transmission of results where there is secured network coverage.

It also requires that the such decision by INEC would be based on the recommendation of the National Communications Commission, and approved by the National Assembly.

The Senate adopted the amended clause in a voice vote, after a closed-door Executive Session to reconcile the position of members.

Meanwhile; the House of Representatives will make another attempt at the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, after failing to do so yesterday.

The House was thrown into rowdiness yesterday following a disagreement on the issue of electronic transmission of results from polling units.

The House of Representatives debate was chaired by the Deputy Speaker, Ahmed Idris Wase, and he adopted the use of voice vote in considering the amendments.

The proceeding was disrupted after the Deputy Speaker ruled against electronic transmission of results, even though those in favour of the provision sounded the loudest.

Following the development, those in favour of electronic transmission of results called for a head-count, but the Deputy Speaker declined.

However, the Deputy Speaker tried to explain how electronic transmission of results would not work in the area where he comes from.

In his intervention; the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, who sat on the floor of the House, challenged his colleagues to explore all options to resolve the controversial issue.

Following the inability of the Deputy Speaker to restore calm in the House, the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, returned to his seat and announced the adjournment of the House.
