Tribunal sacks Douye Diri as Bayelsa State Governor

The Bayelsa State Governorship Election Tribunal has nullified the victory of Governor DOUYE DIRI of the People’s Democratic Party in November last year.

The Tribunal also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct a fresh governorship election in the state within ninety days.

The judgment read by Justice YUNUSA MUSA was based on a petition filed by the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party.

The ANDP had argued that its candidate was unlawfully excluded from participating in the state governorship election last November.

The Tribunal had, over the weekend, dismissed three other petitions against the election of Governor DIRI.

The dismissed petitions were those filed by the Alliance for Democracy, the United People’s Congress and the Liberation Movement.

Recall that the INEC had initially declared DAVID LYON as winner of the governorship election in Bayelsa State.

However, the victory of the APC candidate was nullified by the Supreme Court on February 13, while ruling in a case of certificate forgery.
