UAE grants Afghanistan’s President asylum

Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani has been granted asylum in the United Arab Emirates.

Ghani fled Afghanistan as the Taliban invaded the capital city Kabul over the weekend.

The UAE’s foreign ministry said the country had welcomed the Ghani and his family on humanitarian grounds.

There had been rumours that Ghani might have fled to Tajikistan.

In a Facebook post addressed to Afghan citizens on Sunday, Ghani said he made the difficult decision to leave Afghanistan to avoid bloodshed in the capital city.
