Cardinal Onayeikan faults Sheikh Gumi’s mediatory role for bandits

Former Archbishop of the Catholic Diocese of Abuja, Cardinal John Onayeikan, has faulted religious leaders who act as channels of negotiation with criminal gangs.

Cardinal John Onayeikan said what religious leaders should do is to talk with criminals and persuade them to change their ways.

The Catholic cleric gave these indications during an interview on a television programme monitored in Lagos.

He was responding to a question on the role being played by Sheikh Ahmad Gumi in trying to negotiate for bandits in the northern part of Nigeria.

Cardinal John Onayeikan said the reason there is division of opinions about Sheikh Gumi’s approach is because of lack of transparency.

Meanwhile; Cardinal John Onayeikan has denied a media report that quoted him as calling for the government to resign for failing to tackle the problem of insecurity in the country.
