Governors take lead at Regional Constitution Review Hearings
  • Activist calls for constitutional provision for referendum

This report from Ekiti State says Governor Kayode Fayemi has called on Nigerians to participate in the review of the 1999 Constitution.

Governor Fayemi challenged the people of Nigeria to take advantage of the move by the National Assembly to decide how they want the country to be governed.

Elsewhere in the North East; Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State expressed the hope that the National Assembly would do justice to the review of the constitution.

In the North-Central Geopolitical Zone; Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger State said the review constitution was an opportunity to adopt a system that is workable for Nigeria.

At the Owerri venue of the public hearing; Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State appealed to the Igbo nation to take advantage of the constitution review to correct what they do not like about the system.

In the meantime; some Nigerians have suggested that the amendment of the 1999 Constitution should be done to include a provision for referendum.

A Social Justice Advocate, Ier Jonathan-Ichaver, said with referendum, Nigerians would be able to vote out the 1999 Constitution and make a new one for themselves.

Jonathan-Ichaver, who is the ‎Co-Founder of ‎Sesor Empowerment Foundation, shared her views in an interview with newsmen at the Lagos venue of the Senate Constitution Review public hearing.

At the Ekiti State public hearing, Professor Akin Oyebode, who is a specialist on international law, observed that the 1999 Constitution is too faulty for amendment, and should be replaced with a new one.
