House of Assembly stops police from parading suspects in Lagos

The Lagos State House of Assembly has passed an amendment of the Criminal Justice Law, which intends to stop the police from parading suspected criminals.

The Criminal Justice Law Amendment Bill also tightens the conditions under which the police can arrest someone without a warrant.

These include that such a person must be reasonably suspected to be in unlawfully possession of firearms or other such dangerous instruments.

It also barred the police or any other law enforcement agencies from arresting any person in place of a suspect in a criminal matter.

The amendment bill was passed in a voice vote during plenary yesterday, which was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Wasiu Eshilokun-Sanni.

Meanwhile; the Lagos State House of Assembly has adjourned plenary until Monday next week, July 12, 2021.
