LSHA kicks against extortion of logistics, courier providers

The Lagos State House of Assembly has passed a resolution, calling on local government authorities to stop extorting courier and logistics operators in the state.

The House reminded the local government councils and local council development authorities that the ban on commercial motorcycles does not include operators of courier and logistics services.

The State Assembly also called on the State Commissioner of Police go after everyone involved in extortion in the state and arrest them.

Furthermore, the Assembly urged the Ministry of Information and Strategy to educate operators of Courier and Logistics Services about what is expected of them.

The State House of Assembly took the decisions following a motion by Ganiu Sanni Okanlawon , who represents Kosofe State Constituency One.

In his remarks; the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, reminded LGAs and LCDAs that they do not have the power to collect tax from logistics and courier companies.

Speaker Obasa said the power of the LGAs and LCDAs is for the registration of bicycles, as provided in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Speaker warned that the harassment and extortion of providers of courier and logistic services could affect the ease of doing business in Lagos State, as well as job opportunities for young people.
