Nigeria marks 2nd Democracy Day in honour of M.K.O. Abiola

– 21YRS OF CURRENT DEMOCRATIC RULE
– 27YRS AFTER ANNULMENT OF 1993 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

Today is being observed as public holiday across Nigeria to mark this year’s Democracy Day.
This was announced by the Minister of Interior, RAUF AREGBESOLA, according to a statement by the Permanent Secretary, GEORGINA EHURIAH.
The observation is to remember the annulment of the presidential election in 1993, which was won by late Chief M.K.O. ABIOLA.
The Federal Government did not recognize June 12 as an official holiday until 2018 when President MUHAMMADU BUHARI made the proclamation.
Before now, the government used to celebrate Democracy Day on May 29, which is the anniversary of the current democratic governance that began in 1999.
