Nigerian Navy disowns arms sale allegation by its representative against Chadian soldiers

The Nigerian Navy has disowned comments by its representative at a public hearing on National Security and Intelligence by the House of Representatives.

Commodore Jamila Malafa, who represented the Nigerian Navy at the event, alleged that Chadian soldiers were selling firearms for as low as twenty dollars, which he said was putting Nigeria’s security at risk.

However; the spokesman for the Nigerian Navy, Commodore Suleman Dahun, said Commodore Malafa expressed his personal views.

In a statement to the media, Commodore Dahun said the comments by Commodore Malafa were outside the position of the Navy on the proposed bill before the National Assembly.

Dahun said the Nigerian Navy appreciates the contributions of its regional partners in efforts to check the spread of small arms and light weapons trafficking.

He further said the Nigerian Navy remained committed towards sustaining regional cooperation in ensuring maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.
