Nigerians observe public holiday on 61st  independence anniversary

Today is being observed as a national public holiday across Nigeria to celebrate the country’s sixty-first independence anniversary.

Activities for the celebration of this year’s Independence Day, which started last week, are expected to rounded off today.

In line with its plans, the Federal Government declared a public holiday for today, ordered a partial closure of the Federal Secretariat complex in Abuja from yesterday.

It is not clear if there would be any event today at the Eagle Square opposite the Federal Secretariat to celebrate the independence anniversary.

However, President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday took part in the final ceremony of Nigeria’s Sixtieth Independence Anniversary.

In his address during the event at the banquet hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Buhari declared that Nigeria is a blessed country, with abundant human and natural resources.

The President also pointed out that Nigeria is rich in socio-cultural diversity that needs to be positively used to make the country greater.

For that to happen, President Buhari said Nigerians need to embrace those values that unite the country, and work together to make Nigeria a strong and indivisible nation.
