Pressure mounts on police over actor, Baba Ijesha, accused of defilement

Some celebrities have staged a protest to the Lagos State Police Command’s Criminal Investigation Department, at Panti, Yaba.

The move followed an alleged plan by the police to release Nollywood actor, Olarenwaju Omiyinka, also known as Baba Ijesha, who is accused of defiling a minor.

Popular comedienne, Princess, alleged that Baba Ijesha defiled a minor under her care at the age of seven, with an alleged repeat as the child turned fourteen.

Princess was joined by other celebrities, including Iyabo Ojo, during the protest at the State CID, Panti, Yaba, Thursday, April 29, 2021.

Meanwhile; former Ikorodu Federal Lawmaker, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has described the alleged act by Baba Ijesha as shameful and wicked.

In a message on her Twitter handle; the Chairman of the Nigeria Dispora Commission said Baba Ijesha should not be forgiven, but made to face the full weight of the law.

However; Dabiri-Erewa drew condemnation from other Twitter users for describing Baba Ijesha as a Yoruba actor, which her critics considers as ethnic profiling.

In the meantime; the Lagos State Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, Phil Nneji, has cautioned against holding Baba Ijesha in police custody for too long without trial.

Instead, Phil Nneji said the accused person should be made sign an undertaking to present himself in court for trial whenever the time comes.

Speaking in an interview with Lasgidi FM’s Najite Atirene, the Lagos FIDA Chairperson also called for the strengthening of the judicial system to ensure fairness and justice to all parties.
