Reps Speaker pledges support for workers well-being

The House of Representatives has promised not to do anything that would hurt Nigerian workers.

The Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, made the promise during a meeting with labour leaders at the National Assembly in Abuja.

However, Speaker Gbajabiamila charged the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress to always use advocacy and lobbying to register their positions on legislative decisions.

Gbajabiamila was reacting to the protest by organized labour against a bill that seeks to remove minimum wage from the Exclusive Legislative List in the Nigerian Constitution.

He said the concerns by Labour could be addressed successfully during the planned public hearing on the proposed law.

On his part; NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, is of the view that the proposed restructuring of wages should start with political office holders.

Ayuba Wabba said Labour was ready to defend its position on the minimum wage.
