Senate public hearing on constitution review begins May 26

The Nigerian Senate will on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, begin a two-day zonal public hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution.

The public hearing on proposed amendments of the constitution will be held at two locations in each of the six geopolitical zones of the country.

The locations are Asaba, Enugu, Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, Akure, Jos, Lagos, Owerri, Minna, Sokoto and Port Harcourt.

Recall that the Senate had on Tuesday last week voted to suspend plenary until Tuesday next week, so that Senators can take part in the zonal public hearing.

To set the stage for the public hearing; the Deputy Senate President and Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, Senator OVIE OMO-AGEGE, has listed fifteen items for consideration.

These include devolution of powers and federal structure in governance; local government autonomy; review allocation; state police; as well as judicial and electoral reforms.

Others are socio-economic rights, residency and indigenship, constitutional immunity in criminal matters, and constitutional roles for traditional rulers.
