Senate resumes plenary

The Nigerian National Assembly has resumed plenary after a summer break that lasted for nine weeks.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, welcomed his colleagues back to work with a charge to tackle some pending issues.

These include reconciling two versions of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2010, as passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Senator Lawan called for a speedy consideration of the reports by a joint committee, after which it would be sent to the President to sign into law.

He also pledged the commitment of the Senate to assist the Executive Arm of government in ongoing efforts to tackle security challenges in the country.

The Senate resumed today to meet three Executive Communications from the Presidency.

These are the Explosives Bill 2021; Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons Bill 2021; and a request for approval of multilateral funds under the 2018-2021 external borrowing plan.

President Buhari wants the Senate to approve additional loans of four billion US dollars and seven hundred and ten million euros.

The loans are to be taken from the World Bank, French Development Agency, China-Exim Bank, and the International Fund for Agriculture Development, among others.

In his letter to the Senate President, President Buhari explained that more funds were needed for some critical projects.
