SERAP files FOI demand for details of N729b payment to poor Nigerians

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has asked the Federal Government to provide details of its plan to share seven hundred and twenty-nine billion naira to twenty-four point three million poor Nigerians.

SERAP’s request was made under the Freedom of Information Act, dated January 23, 2021 and signed by its Deputy Director, KOLAWOLE OLUWADARE.

According to the request to the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disasters Management and Social Development, SADIA UMAR-FAROUK, SERAP wants to see the list of the beneficiaries.

It also wants to know the channels through which the money would be paid, and whether the payments would be made in cash or through Bank Verification Numbers.

The group said the details it requested would help to promote transparency and accountability, and remove the risks of mismanagement and diversion of public funds.

SERAP also wants the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, to involved in the payments.
