Supreme Court reverses conviction of senior lawyer, JOSEPH NWOBIKE

The Supreme Court has overruled the conviction of a senior lawyer JOSEPH NWOBIKE.

The Lagos State High Court found NWOBIKE guilty of attempting to pervert the course of justice and sentenced him to thirty days.

The judgment was upheld by the Court of Appeal, but a panel of five Justices of the Supreme Court overruled the decision.

The Supreme Court, led by Justice OLUKAYODE ARIWOOLA, ruled that Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State, based on which NWOBIKE was charged, did not clearly define what constitutes perversion of justice.

The Supreme Court also held that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission lacks the power to investigate and prosecute the offence NWOBIKE was alleged to have committed.

Recall that the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committees had in response to the earlier judgment, suspended NWOBIKE from the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
