The World Trade Organisation has confirmed Nigeria’s former Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as its first African and first female Director General.
The WTO had been without a leader for nearly six months, and Okonjo-Iweala became the sole contender for the top job after her South Korean rival withdrew from the race.
In a televised acceptance address from Washington DC, United States, Okonjo-Iweala declared that it was the beginning of a new era.
Okonjo-Iweala also said that to return the world economy on the part of growth would require to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic speedily.
Meanwhile; President Muhammadu Buhari has extended the goodwill of Nigerians and the Federal Government to the new Director General of the World Trade Organisation, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, GARBA SHEHU; President Buhari said Okonjo-Iweala’s election brings joy and more honour to Nigeria.
Shehu Said the President believes Okonjo-Iweala’s track record of integrity, diligence and passion for development would continue to produce positive results and rewards to mankind.
