CJN defends JUSUN financial autonomy strike

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, says the strike by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria is for a good reason.

Justice Muhammad said he cannot fault the idea of the JUSUN strike since the rights of the union and its members were being denied, especially at state levels.

Speaking during a meeting at the Supreme Court in Abuja with the national leadership of JUSUN, Nigeria’s Number One Judicial Officer praised the union leaders for following the due process in the agitation for financial autonomy for the judiciary.

The Media Assistant to the CJN, Ahuraka Isah, confirmed in a statement that the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Hadiza Mustapha, also attended the meeting.

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria has relaxed its strike in Lagos State, two days after Governor BABAJIDE SANWO-OLU held a meeting with their leaders.

Following the development; the Lagos State Chapter of JUSUN has decided to resume partial operations at the various courts owned by the state government.

Under the arrangement, judicial staff would be on duty at the courts in order for the clearance of backlog of issues, reading of judgement, and decongestion of prisons.

State Chairman of JUSUN, SHOBOWALE KEHINDE, who made the announcement in a statement, said work and official duties would be opened for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of every week.

Meanwhile, Lagos-based Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, is not happy with the decision by JUSUN to relax its strike in Lagos courts.

Adegboruwa disclosed in a statement that it is totally unacceptable, adding that it is either that JUSUN is on strike or not on strike.

Speaking further on telephone with Lasgidi FM News Desk, the Senior Lawyer noted that federal judicial workers and some state judiciary that have some level of autonomy are still part of the strike.

Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa accused the Lagos State Government of doing so much to abort the JUSUN strike, just as it succeeded in dividing the Nigerian Bar Association.

He also faulted that excuse of decongestion of which the leadership of Lagos branch of JUSUN used to adjust its involvement in the nationwide strike.
