Nigeria withdraws from regional maritime organ

Nigeria has pulled out from the Maritime Organisation for West and Central Africa.

The move announced by the spokesman for the Ministry of Transportation, Eric Ojiekwe, is in protest against the nomination of candidates for the position of Secretary-General of the organization.

In a statement; Eric Ojiekwe noted that the Rules of Procedure to determine qualified candidates were not followed during a meeting of the Bureau of Ministers and General Assembly, which was held last week in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He noted that Nigeria’s candidate, Paul Adalikwu, who is the Director of Maritime Services at the Ministry of Transportation, was the only qualified candidate and should have been declared unopposed.
