Over 80 runaway Owerri prison inmates return

More than eighty prisoners who escaped from the Federal Custodial Centre in Owerri, Imo State, have surrendered themselves to the authorities.

Those who returned were among one thousand, eight hundred and forty-four inmates who escaped from the prison following an attack by gunmen in the early hours of Monday.

Sources close to the custodial centre told newsmen in Owerri that forty-two of the inmates returned on Monday evening; seventeen returned on Tuesday; while more than twenty surrendered themselves today.

The unnamed source said the surrendered inmates are mainly those on awaiting trial, those who have less prison term, and others who are close to completing their prison sentence.

The report was also confirmed by the Public Relations Officer of Owerri Correctional Service, James Madugba, but he could not confirm the exact number.

Recall that the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, had promised that the Federal Government would pardon prisoners who escaped from the Owerri Custodial Centre, who willingly returned.
