Court bars FG from deducting funds from federation account to fund police

A Federal High Court in Abuja has stopped the Federal Government from using money from the Federation Account to fund the Nigerian Police Force.

The order by Justice Ahmed Mohammed also affects the funding of other agencies of the government that are not listed in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Justice Mohammed made the order in judgement on a lawsuit filed by the Rivers State Government, challenging the action of the Federal Government.

The Trial Judge also ordered the Federal Government to refund to Rivers and other states all deductions from the Federation Accounts to fund federal agencies, including the police.

Joined in the case are the Attorney General of Federation and Minister of Justice; the Accountant General of the Federation; the Federal Ministry of Finance, and the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission.
