CSO kicks, as Rivers State Govt imposes nighttime curfew

The Rivers State Government has declared a nighttime curfew on all entry points into the state, between 8pm and 6am.

Governor Nyesom Wike announced that the nighttime will affect entry points from Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Imo states.

Governor Wike, who made the announcement in a state broadcast, said the curfew begins from tomorrow.

Wike said the move is in response to recent security breaches and deadly attacks on security operatives by yet-to-be identified gunmen.

Following the announcement, there has been an increased presence of security operatives at the Imo River boundary between Rivers and Abia states, in Oyigbo Local Government Area.

Reports say more security checkpoints have also been mounted along the Port Harcourt-Aba expressway, particularly at the Oyigbo Police Station and an Army Barracks on the road.

The move comes a day after an emergency state security council meeting, after gunmen attacked and killed soldiers, policemen and customs officers in Ikwerre and Abua-Odual local government areas.

Meanwhile; the Rivers State Civil Societies Organiations has condemned the attacks on security operatives in the state.

The Rivers State CSO Chairman, Enefa Georgewill, said security operatives are also victims of the failings by the people in government.

However; Enefa Georgewill, cautioned the Rivers State Government on the imposition of curfew, saying it could worsen the living condition of the people.
