EFCC denies corruption allegation against new chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa

Corruption allegations have been made against the new Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa, hours after his name was sent to the Senate for confirmation.

Bawa is alleged to have been involved in the alleged diversion of two hundred and twenty-four forfeited trucks that were forfeited to the government.

The revelation was made during the investigation of former Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu by a Federal Government panel led by retired Justice Ayo Salami.

However; the EFCC, in a statement by its spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, said the allegation against BAWA is not true.

Uwujaren also denied reports that Bawa was arrested and removed from his position as Port Harcourt Zonal Head of the EFCC over the allegation.

The statement further noted that while Bawa was in charge of the Port Harcourt office of the EFCC in 2019, his responsibilities did not include the sale of assets.

Meanwhile; the Senate on Tuesday, February 16, 20216, confirmed receipt of President Muhammadu Buhari’s request for the confirmation of Abdulrasheed Bawa as EFCC Chairman.

The Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, read President Buhari’s letter to his colleagues when the Senate resumed sitting for the week.
