Presidential spokesman uncertain about appointment of new IGP

The Inspector General of Police, IBRAHIM ADAMU, leaves office Monday, February 1, 2021, and proceeds on retirement, after completing the mandatory thirty-five years in service.

However, President MUHAMMADU BUHARI has not appointed a replacement, and his spokesman, GARBA SHEHU, said he is not aware when a new Inspector General of Police would be announced.

SHEHU said President BUHARI is still at his home in Daura, Katsina State, on official visit, and is not expected to return to Abuja until Tuesday, February 2, 2021.

However; for those who are demanding that the next IGP should come from a particular region of the country, the Presidential spokesman said such appointment cannot be made on the basis of ethnicity.

GARBA SHEHU made the submissions while responding to questions on a television programme monitored in Lagos.

Before appointing the next Inspector General of Police, President BUHARI is expected to summon a meeting of the National Police Council to present his choice.

The NPC, which is made up of governors of the thirty-six states and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, plays advisory role in the appointment of the Inspector General of Police.
