Twitter Suspension: US urges Federal Government to respect freedom of expression

The United States government has again called on the Federal Government to respect the rights of Nigerians to freedom of expression.

The US is demanding for the third time for the Nigerian government to lift the suspension it placed on the operations of Twitter in the country,

The spokesman for the US Department of State, Ned Price, noted in a statement that freedom of expression and access to information are essential ingredients in any democratic setting.

Price further noted that unduly restricting the ability of Nigerians to report, gather, and disseminate opinions and information has no place in a democracy.

The State Department official said the US support Nigeria as it works towards unity, peace, and prosperity.

He also faulted the directive by the National Broadcasting Commission to broadcast stations in Nigeria deactivate Twitter and stop using the platform to source for information and opinions.

The US Embassy in Nigeria had joint other foreign missions in the country to condemn the Twitter suspension, which was further reinforced by the United States Agency for International Development, USAID.
